2014 Carbuncle Cup - Woolwich Central

some thirty years ago, Prince Charles gave the world a new architectural term to the common parlance as he criticised an extension to the National Gallery by referring to it as a "monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend". The point of the comment was that the creation stood out like a sore thumb. Today, this label is applied to those wonderfully 'out of character' or perhaps 'blinking awful abominations' that abound today.

This year's winner of the 'Carbuncle Cup' is:

Woolwich Central

Now where would you nominate as a Carbuncle I wonder?

And Tesco replaced a Post Office and a parade of Victorian shops, built in Kentish Brick, which was supposed to be conserved.

Just shows the power and influence wielded by the super market chain over a quite rabid, left wing council that they allowed this to happen.

But of course, it's only Woolwich, would never have been allowed in Greenwich, the genteel part of the borough.

Sounds like a greater shame than just the architecture might suggest.

Same thing found in Tamworth - superb old buildings 'encouraged' to decay and become poor and then replaced by terrible concrete monstrosities.
